The 54th Annual Fleur de Lis Charity Ball to benefit SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital was celebrated Dec. 29 at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch. That evening, 36 young women were presented to the Most Rev. Edward M. Rice, Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis, before an admiring audience of friends and family.

WHY: Almost 300 guests participated in the Arthritis Foundation’s 32nd annual Silver Ball Gala to raise funds that are part of those used for local research and programs that help people living with arthritis. One in every five people in the United States will be troubled with arthritis during their lifetime, two-thirds of whom will be under the age of 65, including 300,000 children. In addition to Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis, the Center for Disease Control list of arthritis diseases includes Lupus, Vasculitis, Spondylitis, Gout and more than 100 other rheumatic diseases.
WHO: Co-chairs for the event, Walter and Christine Smith, opened the presentation by paying tribute to the many local “heroes” who made significance contributions this past year in support of the foundation's mission. Among them, Brad Pittenger was awarded the 2012 Leon Neuman Distinguished Service Award in honor of the Foundation's most enduring board member and event founder. Mr. Pittenger is an Arthritis Foundation board member whose generosity and volunteer service over the past seven years has produced significant results in sponsorship, personal donations, in-kind donations and team fundraising dollars
HIGHLIGHTS: The opulent settings of the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown St. Louis was the setting for cocktails, dining and auctions. Special recognition was also given to 4 others who have made significant contributions locally to the advancing the foundation’s mission: John Atkinson, M.D. (Research/Medical Hero), John Yates (Volunteer Hero), Arlen Harris (Sports Hero), and Des Peres Hospital (Corporate Sponsorship Hero).
Speaking during the event, Dr. John P. Atkinson, reminded the audience of recent breakthroughs in the treatment of patients with gout and many other forms of arthritis. He also shared exciting news about promising new research that is being done right here in the St. Louis area. Dr. Atkinson is the Acting Chief of the Division of Rheumatology at Washington University.

Why: In 1901, Andrew Carnegie donated $1 million ($24.3 Million in today's dollars) to the St. Louis Public Library. While half the funds were used to build 6 branch libraries in St. Louis neighborhoods, the remaining $500,00 covered one-third of the cost to build the Central Library, opened in 1912, with St. Louis civic leaders and others raising the rest. Proceeds from the evening's gala were to benefit the St. Louis Public Library Foundation's Central To Your World capital campaign to restore and modernize the downtown Central Library. This library, an architectural landmark located at 13th and Olive and designed by renowned architect Cass Gilbert, has been transformed into a modern 21st century library.
Who: Event Co-Chairs Robert Guller, Patricia Mercurio and Dorte Probstein; Capital Campaign Co-Charis Alsion Nichols Ferring and Thomas F. Schlafly; Honorary Chair Vartan Gregorian, President, Carnegie Corporation of New York.
Highlights: The restored opulence and grandeur of the this Carnegie library was a highlight in and of itself, but this black-tie affair included cocktails, dining and a short program followed by celebratory drinks and dancing to Wild Cool & Swingin' in the Great Hall. All four floors of the library were open to explore.
