  • What: 10th Annual Dan McLaughlin Golf Tournament Where: Normandy Hills Country Club When: October 8, 2012 Why: To benefit the Special Education Foundation that was established in 1984 as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission it is to assist children with disabilities in St. Louis County achieve success in areas not supported by tax dollars. Support areas include scholarships, summer camps, arts in the classroom, hearing aids, eyeglasses, assistive equipment, a high school leadership program, teacher mini-grants for innovative classroom programs, parent support, Special Olympics and student recognition. The Special School District serves children and youth with disabilities, ages 3 to 21, throughout St. Louis County. More than 16 percent of students in St. Louis County receive special education services. Disabilities range from mild to severe, however the majority of students have learning disabilities. The District is responsible for special education services in the 23 partner districts throughout the county. The Foundation is completely independent of the Special School District. It relies solely on private donations for financial support. The Foundation receives no support from the United Way, government sources and revenues or the Special School District. A volunteer board of directors guides all Foundation endeavors. The Foundation employs an executive director and part-time administrative, program and event support.
